Before any product is produced, prepared, distributed or stored as organic, or imported from or exported to a third country, the operator (establishment) must be part of a control system. Organic certification must be carried out by an accredited and recognised certification body. You will recognise us by the name "Sertifikācijas un testēšanas centrs" SIA and the control body code LV-BIO-02.

To label, advertise and use the words "bio" or "eco" for organic products, operators must comply with a number of regulatory requirements.

Organic food is made from organically produced ingredients of agricultural origin. Limited use is made of food additives, non-organic ingredients with mainly technological and sensory functions. The preparation, storage and storage of processed organic food shall be carried out in a time or space separate from non-organic products. Handling of organic products shall be carried out only after appropriate cleaning of the production equipment. Organic products may be transported to other units (wholesalers, retailers) in suitable packaging, containers and vehicles which are sealed in such a way that the contents cannot be altered or replaced without manipulation.

In addition to general information, pre-packaged organic food must bear the organic logo of the European Union and the code of the control body that controls the operator who carried out the last production or preparation operation. The code and the indication of the place of origin of the raw materials shall be placed in the same visual field as the EU organic logo. The indication of the place of production of the agricultural raw materials contained in the product shall be placed immediately below the code of the control body and indicated in one of the following ways :

Agriculture in the EU - agricultural raw materials grown in the EU

Agriculture outside the EU - agricultural raw materials grown in third countries

Agriculture EU/non-EU - part of l/s raw material grown in EU, part in third country

The indication 'EU' or 'non-EU' may be replaced or supplemented by the name of a country or by the name of a country and a region, provided that all the agricultural raw materials in the product are grown in the country or region concerned.

At EU level, the circulation of organic products, the conditions for labelling and the general principles, objectives and rules of organic farming are governed by Regulation (EU) No 2018/848 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 2018 on organic production and labelling of organic products and repealing Council Regulation (EC) No 834/2007. The rules ensure that when a consumer buys a product, they receive a guarantee that the food has been grown in accordance with organic principles - it is regulated, verified and controlled.
