Potential sources of contamination and risks to organic production on the farm

When starting to farm organically, the operator needs to identify potential sources of risk in their business, assess the level of risk and understand the causes of risk.

The next step is to develop a plan of precautionary measures to be implemented during the business operation to prevent contamination of the products throughout the operator's production process.

NEW PROCEDURE FOR ISSUING ORGANIC CERTIFICATES FROM 1 JANUARY 2023!

From 1 January 2023, organic certificates will be issued and made publicly available only on the common European Commission website TRACES. The transition period to the new system will be over and from the new year certificates will only be issued on the EC website TRACES.

The new Regulation (EU) 2018/848 of the European Parliament and of the Council on organic production and labelling of organic products establishes a completely new framework for the issuing, maintenance and publication of certificates for organic operators:

  1. It is uniform across all EU countries on the EC's TRACES NT website, where the certificate is easily accessible in all official EU languages and to all interested parties,
  2. One certificate is issued per operator for production and processing activities,
  3. The certificate's authenticity and validity can be easily verified, reducing the risk of forgery and making it more secure for business

With all this, the search for certificates will be different.

STC is also adapting its database to the new system, so from 1 January 2023, certificates will be issued and available only through the TRACES certificate maintenance system.

Please pay attention if:

  1. If you plan to buy grain, peas or buckwheat from other farms and sell it from your own farm, you must: register as a wholesaler with the Food and Veterinary Service. Certification and Testing Centre Ltd.
  2. Grain drying must be carried out in your own grain dryer or in an organically certified dryer of another company. If your company provides drying services to other organic farms, this activity must be certified. For information on dryer certification: parstrade.bl@stc.lv

INVENTORIES OF CONVENTIONAL SEED AND VEGETATIVE PROPAGATING MATERIAL

Organic farmers are required to report to the State Plant Protection Service (SPS) the conventional seed and vegetative propagating material used, including the species covered by the general authorisation.

The inventory form is available on the VAAD website: https://saite.lv/DHbZp

This is necessary to facilitate the development of the market for organic propagating material, the expansion of the range of organic propagating material and accessibility.
